SAP Business AI: what is ready for use – and what the groundwork is

In 2026 SAP has expanded Joule from an assistant into an agentic platform. We assess for you which of it holds up for your processes – and say openly that the real groundwork lies in S/4HANA and maintained master data.

We work with AI tools ourselves every day and assess SAP Business AI for you on that basis – as a professional assessment, not as an implementation service.

How you know it is worth a look

  • You are already on S/4HANA, ideally in a cloud edition – that is where SAP provides most AI functions.
  • Your master data is reliable. AI on poor data mainly delivers wrong answers quickly.
  • Your workflows contain recurring manual work with clear rules – reports, document checks, creation processes.

What is ready for use in 2026

For 2026 SAP cites more than 2,400 Joule skills and a growing number of specialised agents – more than 60 for the supply chain alone, more on that below. What is practically usable today is above all reporting in natural language instead of selection screens, an agent for project creation, support in troubleshooting electronic documents, and ABAP tools that evaluate S/4HANA readiness checks and make simple corrections themselves.

What we advise against: AI as the reason for a project. The functions largely build on S/4HANA and maintained master data – both are the real groundwork, and that pays off regardless of AI.

How we measure business AI for you

  • The foundation comes first: release level, licence package and the data quality in exactly those objects the topic is about. Without clean data every function stays a promise.
  • We draw a clear line between what is available today and what is on the roadmap. With this subject that distinction is harder to make than with others.
  • The candidates are processes with clear rules and high volume, not the exceptional cases that get talked about most.
  • You receive a short written assessment: what makes sense now, what later, what not – and which groundwork on data and system comes first.

How we build assessments of this kind in general is set out on the SAP overview. How we work – the shared framework

Joule in logistics and the supply chain

Assistants and agents for the supply chain

In May 2026 SAP announced six Joule assistants under the title “Autonomous Supply Chain Management” – among them a Logistics Assistant, a Business Network Assistant and a Planning Assistant – as well as more than 60 agents for supply chain and logistics processes alone that are to become available in stages over the course of 2026; they are embedded in IBP, EWM and SAP Cloud ERP among others, with a dedicated assistant for the Business Network. Which of them are generally available changes from quarter to quarter – we check at the time of your planning. For logistics programmes that means: the assistants belong in the roadmap, not in the cut-over.

What you end up with

  • A written assessment: what holds up now, what is roadmap and what does not fit you
  • A list of prerequisites per candidate process – release, licence, data quality
  • A recommendation on where the groundwork on master data and processes comes first

What we do not do

  • We do not sell you an AI project. If the prerequisites are missing, we say so openly – and show where the groundwork lies.
  • We do not develop our own AI solutions or agents. We assess what SAP delivers.
  • We do not run AI implementation projects. We tell you what fits your processes and when the time is right.

Typical questions

Is our data used to train third-party models?
According to SAP, Joule does not use customer data to train models. Which assurances apply in detail – including whether SAP may use data to improve its own AI features – is set out in your contract; we include that in the assessment.
Do we need S/4HANA for this?
For the embedded functions, yes, with current release maintenance – and SAP delivers most of them in the cloud editions. On ECC and on S/4HANA in your own data centre, following SAP’s announcement of May 2026, you receive only selected AI scenarios, and only if you commit to moving the majority of your landscape to SAP Cloud ERP.
Does it replace employees?
No. It shortens paths – for reports, document checks and routine creation, and agents complete simple steps on their own. You decide where decisions are taken; responsibility stays with your people.
What does it cost?
The scope depends on the licence package booked; we do not quote specific prices because they change too quickly. The bigger item is the groundwork on data and system anyway.

Initial consultation on SAP Business AI

Would you like to know whether it is worth a look for you now? A short conversation usually settles that – we look forward to it. And if you are a consulting firm that has to assess this topic for a client, that is a question we will think through together with you.
